Living Last Supper

Re-enactment of the Last Supper at the Highland Avenue UMC Maundy Thursday Service.

(The cast is listed below from left to right)

On Maundy Thursday, April 14, members of Highland Avenue UMC, Green Street UMC, Augusta, and Randolph UMC and even two members of the Church on the Cape, Cape Porpoise gathered in our Fellowship Hall (and on Zoom) for a very moving re-enactment of The Last Supper. Maundy Thursday marks the night when the Last Supper took place, and the twelve disciples, in costume, grappled with their consciences as they responded to Jesus’ prediction of betrayal with “Is it I?”.

The presentation was originally designed by a pastor, Ernest K. Emurian, over 50 years ago. Since that time, an estimated 30,000 people have watched it. The drama was inspired by Leonardo DaVinci’s famous painting.

Our gratitude to all who helped make it happen: to Jesus, and to the 12 disciples (two of whom live an hour and a half away..); to the persons who did an exquisite job of ‘setting the table’; the choreographer, who did the positioning of the disciples; the staff member of the High School drama department who so generously supplied us with costumes, and many others who worked “behind the scenes.” Thank you ever so much!
